The exact identity of that other Thomas McGiffin is uncertain so caution should be used by McGiffin family researchers. ----------- According to McGiffin family microfilm records on file at the Fairfield Public Library and information provided by other McGiffin sources: Son of Thomas McGiffin and Maris Norton McGiffin, born in Washington county, PA. The marriage date for Thomas McGiffin and Sarah Clark McGiffin was 1851, according to his obituary. Sarah died in 1861 after giving birth to their last child. Sarah was then buried in Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church cemetery, Ten Mile, Washington county, PA. His marriage to Margaret Strain McGriffin evidently did not take place in Jefferson county, Iowa as there do not appear to be marriage records for them. It is believed that they were married before 1865, but when and where isn't clear. It does appear that Margaret raised Thomas's children as her own, and thus appears in several accounts as their "mother"; not biological but by marriage. It isn't known if Thomas and Margaret had any children of their own; it doesn't appear so but it is possible. -------- ~~~~ -------- Note: the following is adapted from the original full text of the death notice/obituary for Thomas McGiffin. Similar stories were published in both the Fairfield Ledger (see below) and the Fairfield Tribune (Wed. July 23, 1890, Pg. 5 Col. 3). Thomas accidently drowned in a well on his rural farm. The first paragraphs of each published account go into considerable detail of his drowning, beyond the scope of this memorial (also in deference to F/A/G guidelines that discourage graphic content about the death of a particular person). What is transcribed below is for the benefit of accounting for his life and family: ~~~~~~~~ Fairfield Ledger July 23, 1890 Pg. 3 Col. 6&6 (partly edited for content) DROWNED IN A WELL. A Peculiar Accident by which Thos. McGiffin Lost His Life. Thomas McGiffin, an aged and well known farmer who has lived just northwest of town for more than twenty-five years past, was drowned in a well on his farm Thursday afternoon ..... Thomas McGiffin was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, January 13th, 1818, and grew to manhood there. He was twice married, to Sarah CLARK, in 1851, and after her death to Miss Margaret STRAIN, who survives him. Six children were the issue of his first marriage, three sons and three daughters. Of these, the three sons, Nat (sic. Nathaniel is proper first name), Abner and John, are now living in Montana, Emma is the wife of D.F. McLEAN of this county, Sadie (sic. a/k/a Sarah on her headstone) is at home, while Annie died here a few years ago. In October, 1863, the family removed to this county, Mr. McGIFFIN having purchased the ALSTON farm on which he resided until his death. For a number of years he was extensively engaged in sheep farming, but increasing age and its infirmities compelled him to give up the hard work of the farm, and for several years he has led a very quiet and retired life. He had been a member of the Presbyterian church since early manhood, and for a number of years was an elder of the church of that denomination in this city. He was a most exemplary man, and his long life was one of honesty and uprightness. In his old home in Pennsylvania and in his newer one in Iowa he was held in the hightest esteem, and news of his sudden and tragic death will be received with the greatest sorrow by the many people who have known him so long and so well. The funeral occurred from the family residence Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and the remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery. Services were conducted by Dr. Magill, pastor of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Carson Reed, a former pastor, and Dr. A.C. Smith. The funeral was very largely attended by friends of the family from both city and country. --------- Children by his first wife, Sarah Clark McGiffin: Nathaniel "Nat" McGiffin Annie M McGiffin Sarah (a/k/a Sadie) McGiffin Emma McGiffin McLean Abner McGiffin John McGiffin Caution: Emma has a specific birth date in September 1851 listed in her obituary. Nathaniel has been listed as born in or about 1851/1852. Either they were twins, or Nathaniel was then more likely born in 1852. Will probably never know for certain.
