Thomas Penn Smith, son of William Philip and Anna (Thomas) Smith, was born at Catawissa, Pennsylvania, November 9, 1856; and passed away January 9, 1941, aged 84 years and 2 months. He was of a family of seven children, all passing away in childhood, except he and a sister, Emma (Smith) Hockett, who preceded him in in death in 1920. In 1857 his parents moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where he lived until he was 14 years old. They then moved to the farm near Denova, where they resided for many years. A few weeks after moving to the country in 1871 his father passed away and he was left with the responsibility of caring for the farm. In October 1878 Penn, his widowed mother, his sister Emma and her husband Harvey Hockett, and several others from the Denova neighborhood moved to Rooks County, Kansas. He returned to Denova just before his wedding to Ella Frazer on February 4, 1880. Two weeks later Penn and Ella, in covered wagons drawn by mules, began a three-week 450 mile journey to their new home near Stockton, Rooks County, Kansas. Penn and Ella, along with their children Retta (born in 1883) and Sidney (born in 1887) spent 17 years of pioneer life in Kansas. They endured losses on account of grasshoppers, hail and windstorms, drought and sickness. At the time of the scourge of typhoid fever in January of 1897, an infant son died and the others in the family barely escaped death. Soon after this they decided to return to Henry County, Iowa, where their daughter Lucile was born in 1898. Penn and Ella were privileged to spend over 60 years together, she having passed away September 7, 1940. They were the parents of three children, Mrs. Charlie Brown of Mt. Pleasant; Sidney Smith of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. E.A. Ruggels of Natoma, Kansas. He also leaves seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and three of his sister's children who were very dear to him: Etna Carey of Oregon; Amos Hockett of California; and Blanche McFadden of Kansas. Mrs. Bessie F. Collins, who officiated at the funeral, took her text from I Peter 17-19. She was assisted by Dean Buster, the pastor of Cedar Creek Friends Church, who read the scripture. The songs "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" were sung by Mrs. Bert Jay and Mrs. Howard Brown. The following nephews were the pall bearers: Manley Frazer, Ernest Frazer, Fred White, Roy White, Lloyd Frazer, and Delbert Lamm. Burial was in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. While living in Kansas he was converted and became an earnest Christian. He was a kind and very conscientious man and a member of the Cedar Creek Friends Church. He leaves many friends and neighbors who will miss his presence greatly.
