He married Dorothy Tucker on 26 October 1873 in Appanoose Co., IA. They were the parents of 4 children: Ida M, Minnie B, Myrtle A, & Dorothy E. Jan 9, 1902 - Jefferson Bee - Thomas E. Underwood was born in Castle county, Tenn., January 1st, 1851. He was one of a family of thirteen children, five brothers and eight sisters. His mother and five of his sisters preceded him to the "Silent Land." His father, four brothers, and two sisters were in attendance upon his funeral. In his infancy his parents removed from Tenn., and settled in Appanoose county, Iowa, where they lived for several years. When a young man 24 years of age, he there married Miss Dorothy Tucker, with whom he lived in a happy wedlock for about 27 years. He was the father of four children, all daughters: Ida M., Minnie B., Myrtle A. and Dorothy E. His wife and all the children were permitted to be with him in his last moments. He felt that he could not live, and expressed himself as ready and willing to go. He spoke of his mother and his sisters who had passed on before him, and said he would soon he with them. In these words his sorrowing loved ones find great comfort. Mr. Underwood was a man of quiet and retiring disposition, an upright and industrious citizen, a most faithful and sympathetic friend, a beloved son and brother, an indulgent father and a devoted husband. He greatly loved his own home better than any other spot on earth. He passed away on Friday, Jan. 3d, aged fifty-one years and two days. After a brief prayer at the family residence, a large procession followed the remains to the Methodist church in Jefferson, and the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Billingsley, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. Sarchet. The floral offerings and decorations were very fine, and the music was especially appropriate and comforting. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Jefferson cemetery, there to await the summons of Him who said, "I am the resurrection and the life." The sympathy of the entire community will go out to the bereaved widow and her sorrowing children. May the God of all comfort bestow upon them His all-sufficiont grace. L.K.B.
