Description	:	Thomas Sanford, Sr., was born in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex County, England, in 1607-08 and came to America from England in his early twenties, probably between 1632-34. In dispute is whether he was part of a group, including his uncle Andrew Warner and brother Andrew Sanford, who came on the ship Arabella with the Winthrop Fleet. Dates are murky. Thomas moved to Milford in 1639-43, as one of the original 44 pioneer settlers there. The Memorial Bridge built in 1889 in Milford has the names of Milford Pioneers engraved in the large stones of its battlements: "Thomas Sandford Obit 1681; Sarah His Wife." Some sources list Dorothea's children as Ezekiel and Sarah, but since Dorothea died in 1634-37? and Sarah, the daughter, was not born until 1639, she must be the daughter of Sarah Meadows. Thomas and Sarah Meadows had 5 more children: Mary, Samuel, Thomas Andrew, Jr., Ephraim, and Elizabeth. This source gives some data which conflicts with that above: "Thomas Sanford arrived in the colonies with his younger brother Andrew and his uncle, Andrew Warner, in 1632 at Dorchester, Massachusetts. He sailed on the ship Arabella as part of the Winthrop Fleet. Many ships over many months came as a part of that activity. He, one brother and their uncle, traveled as single men. He married Dorothea Meadows in Dorchester and they had two children. She died shortly after. He married Sarah Meadows and they set out for Hartford, Connecticut, where some of his relatives had settled, then went on to Milford, Connecticut, where they made their home and had more children. They became an important part of that community by owning property and being very active in both church and civic affairs. They were considered among the founders of Milford, Connecticut. All but the first two children were born at Milford and the parents were buried there. He was married to Sarah Meadows in 1641 in Dorchester. There are no stones marking their graves. The oldest stone marker is 1726, Mrs. Samuel Sanford. Maid Sara Whitlock is mentioned in his will. November 1639. Thomas named as one of original 44 pioneer settlers in Milford at this date. Likely he moved to Milford only at a later time. 22 November 1643. Thomas received 2.75 acres house lotts, 16.5 acres upland, 0.7 acres and 6 poles meadow. 24 November 1651. Granted a parcel of land on an adjacent island. 22 April 1656.
