Hedges, former State Grange agriculture chairman, past Master of the Chelan County Pomona and the Stemilt Hill Granges. Mr. Hedges succumbed at the Group Health hospital, Seattle, after a 6-months illness. He had been unconscious for about a week, following surgery for a spinal ailment. Survivors include Mrs. Hedges, two sons, Laurence and Ralph (former State Grange Overseer), a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Love, seven grandchildren, five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held last Friday at the Jones and Jones mortuary, Wenatchee. Mr. Hedges was born in Canada in 1885 but spent practically all of his life in the state of Washington. At age 3 he came with the family to Douglas County, and at 15 moved to Seattle where he was graduated from high school and worked in the building trade. At 25 he took up a homestead in Harney County, Ore., then went into fruit growing on Stemilt Hill near Wenatchee in 1914. He and his family became enthusiastic Grangers and served in various Grange offices, Mr. Hedges being a director of the Wenatchee Grange Supply. As Pomona Master in 1942 he led host committees participating in the entertainment of both the National and State Granges in the same year at Wenatchee. He firmly believed that all farmers should be members of the Grange and constantly battled for economic equality for agriculture. As State Grange agriculture chairman he was a pioneer in promoting the so-called two-price or domestic parity plan. During the 1940's he was instrumental in having Congressman Walt Horan introduce a bill in Congress providing for farmer-elected commodity commissions to handle surpluses and prevent them from demoralizing market prices. The bill failed, however, for lack of support at the national level. Mr. Hedges was the author of hundreds of home-spun poems expressing his love for agriculture and his deep religious feelings concerning nature, the brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God. He was also co-owner with his brothers of patents on a revolutionary gasoline engine. The brothers include Thomas S. Hedges, former state Grange Overseer and onetime state Tax Commissioner. The latter's son, T. R. (Bob) Hedges, is a past president and still an active leader in the Washington Association of Soil Conservation Districts.
