Description	:	Thor Holt (Holte) was born Feb 6, 1882 in Vikedal, Norway to Tormod Torsen Holte and Valborg (Viarsdtr) Homletveit. He was one of nine children, the first son of the family. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norway also receiving his education there before coming to America at the age of 16. Thor met and... Read More	Thor Holt (Holte) was born Feb 6, 1882 in Vikedal, Norway to Tormod Torsen Holte and Valborg (Viarsdtr) Homletveit. He was one of nine children, the first son of the family. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norway also receiving his education there before coming to America at the age of 16. Thor arrived in America, April 13, 1898 on the ship Unbring landing in New York. From there, he traveled to Centerville SD where he worked in the area as a farm hand for several years. Thor met and courted Rachel Ostrem for some time before they were married at the Immanuel Lutheran Church by Pastor Alberg. After their marriage, Thor worked as a dray man at Huron SD. before working in the Hooker area. In 1917, Thor bought a farm north of Montrose SD. The farm was located 2 miles south and 3 1/2 miles west of the Buffalo Trading Post. On this quarter of land, Thor built a new home for his family. But times were not good for the growing Holte family. Prices were poor, grasshoppers, and the dry weather did not help during the early 1920's. Thor sold his farm to Wicks in September of 1924. In the spring of 1925, Thor moved his family to the Arneson farm near Wakonda SD. In 1947, Orville took over farming operations so Thor and Rachel retired and moved into the city of Centerville. In 1949, Rachel passed away. Thor continued to live in Centerville until 1958, when he then moved back to the farm with his son, Orville. On September 16, 1960, Thor passed away at the home of his son, Orville. Thor is buried in the Holland Cemetery near Centerville SD.
