He was baptized at the Kvikne Church 30 Mar 1879, with baptismal sponsors Sven O. Hysjulien, Iver T. Hage, Paul H. Skabo, Embjør J. Hysjulien, and Ingeborg S. Tungen. He was baptized at the Kvikne Church 30 Mar 1879, with baptismal sponsors Sven O. Hysjulien, Iver T. Hage, Paul H. Skabo, Embjør J. Hysjulien, and Ingeborg S. Tungen. Fredrik was confirmed at the Kvikne Church 22 Apr 1894, and rated “almost very good” in his studies. Fredrik and his parents and siblings lived on the Bakkerud farm at that time. Fredrik’s father was a tradesman and farm operator. The Heide family used a permanent surname much earlier than most people in rural Norway (and so used the name Heide regardless of where they lived). According to Einar Hovdhaugen, in his “Gardar og Slekter i Fron” (vol. 2, p. 388), citing the book “Slekten Heide” (“The Heide Family”), the Heide family migrated from Ditmarsk (Dithmarschen) in Holstein (sometime before 1623). (In fact, Heide is the capital city of Dithmarschen Kreis.) Fredrik married Berthe Amundsdatter Kvalen in Norway. The book “Gardar og Slekter i Fron” says Berte Heide came to America in 1904, while the 1920 US census says Fredrik came to America in 1903. (I don’t know whether they came together, as a source could be wrong.) Their first child, Christ, was born in South Dakota in 1904. Their other three children were born in North Dakota. Bertha died 18 Feb 1918. On the 1920 census, Fredrik is a widower with four sons (Christ, Albert, Martin, and Olaf), ranging in age from 15 to 7, living in Daneville Township, Divide County, ND, where he is a farmer. The third household after Fredrik on that census is a widow with six children, “Anna Sloan,” also a native of Kvikne, Nord-Fron. Fredrik and Anna were married in about 1923, and they had four children together (Magnhild, Tillie, Berte, and Timon). Fredrik died 12 Mar 1972 in Williams County, ND. He was a resident of Divide County.
