Rhodes Another old-time and well-known Akron business man, U. G. Rhodes, answered the final summons last week. Some two years ago his health and strenght began a gradual decline that ended in his death at his home in Akron last Thursday evening, February 24, having attained the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 10 days. Ulysses Grant Rhodes, resident of this vicinity for 55 years, was the son of Dr. Gilbert Pendleton and Sarah B. St. John Rhodes, born May 14, 1860 in Lincoln Hardin county, Iowa. He moved with his parents to Maskell, Nebr., and after the big Missouri river flood of 1881, when the river claimed their farm, they moved to South Dakota, near Vermillion later moving to Buena Vista county, Iowa. In 1887 the family moved to Haddem, Kansas, where he operated a farm. He was baptized and joined the Methodist church at that place. He was united in marriage with Vella Irons on Christmas day, 1892 Haddam, Kansas, where he operated there eight years they came to Akron, where he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, J. O. Douglass, under the firm name of Douglass & Rhodes observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1942. He was the last member of a family of eight children were reared in that faith. Mr. Rhodes possessed a quiet, friendly nature that won for him a host of friends, who join with the family in mourning his passing. His wife preceded him in death October 10, 1945. Those surviving are his son, Ralph, of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Florence Lias and Marion Thorberg, of Akron; Mrs. Lila Kirk, of Racine, Wis.; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services wereheld in Wesley Methodist church Monday afternoon, with Rev. Donald James officiation. The men's quartet, composed of Leslie Wade, Karl Silkebakken, Frank Mather and Harry Nelson, sang "whispering Hope" and "The Lord's Prayer," accompanied by Mrs. Harry Nelson. Pallbearers were L. Dee Ross, Donald Ross, Clair McCorkell, John Sykes, Paul Papritz, and Lloyd Clark. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. Those coming from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rhodes, Houston, Texas; Mrs. Clyde Kirk, of Racing, Wisconsin; Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Dickerson, Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. L. A.
