Keeler of Vining was taken with a cramp and was drowned before help could reach him from friends who accompanied him to the river. In company with three friends William Dolash, Charles Crenin, and Frank Roushar, all young men of Vining. Mr. Keeler had gone to the river to spend the day. The accident occurred shortly after the men arrived at the river. Keller had swum across the river, which was badly swollen from the recent rains, and was standing on a sandbar just before his friends observed him to be in trouble. Dolash, who is a powerful swimmer, went to the assistance of Keeler. He too was taken with a cramp and had to struggle to reach shore. A rope was thrown to Keeler, but he was unable to grab it and went down in about twenty feet of water. The body was recovered and taken to his home in Vining, where the funeral was held Sunday. Many friends were present to pay their last respects to a worthy and popular young man. James Keeler was a native of Tama county and was born in Vining 31 years ago. Practically his entire life was spent on the farm. Three years ago. he moved to Vining, where he made a home for his mother. Last fall he was married, and the mother continued to make her home with the young couple. Besides the mother and young wife, he is survived by three sisters, Mesdames A. W. Byers and James Suchy of this city and John Riha of Vining. Mr. Keeler was well and favorably known in the vicinity of Vining, where he operated a threshing machine outfit for several years. The past summer he had been employed by Tama county and was operating his engine one the grading work between Tama and Chelsea. He was a young man of steady, industrious habits and his loss will be deeply felt in the community where his entire life had been spent.
