She was born July 22, 1923, on the family farm northeast of Scribner to George and Martha (Hilbers) Tonjes. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Scribner High School in May 1940. After graduation she continued to work for her parents on the farm and also worked for her neighbors for a couple of years. She then worked for Peterson Drug Store. Read More	Tuesday, Nov 25, 2008 - 10:49:07 am CST Valenda Poppe, 85, of Scribner died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Fremont Area Medical Center. She was born July 22, 1923, on the family farm northeast of Scribner to George and Martha (Hilbers) Tonjes. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Scribner High School in May 1940. After graduation she continued to work for her parents on the farm and also worked for her neighbors for a couple of years. She then worked for Peterson Drug Store. She married Donald Poppe on June 1, 1947. After their marriage, the couple moved to a farm south of Scribner. They then moved to Valenda's parents' farm in 1962 and farmed together there until moving into Scribner in 1992. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. At St. Paul's, she taught Sunday school and was Sunday school secretary. She was a member of St. Paul's WELCA and sewed many quilts for the church to be donated. She also was a member of the Up and Cuming Extension Club. Survivors include: her husband; a daughter, Janice (and husband, Joe) Smeal of Scribner; a son, Wayne (and wife, Linda) Poppe of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Grace Gunderson of Lyons; a brother, Norman (and wife, Norma) Tonjes of Scribner; sister-in-law, Ann Tonjes of Scribner; brother-in-law, Ed Fahrenholz of Allen; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Hooper. Vicar Judy Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at Ludvigsen's Scribner Funeral Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.
