Tonjes was born Sept. 24, 1920, in Allen. He attended District 35 School in rural Dodge County. He farmed with his father on a farm northeast of Scribner. He married Anna Wooldrik April 5, 1945, at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. He worked as a bus driver for Scribner Public Schools in 1960. He started working as school custodian and bus driver, full time for the school system a year later. He retired in 1985.... He married Anna Wooldrik April 5, 1945, at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. He worked as a bus driver for Scribner Public Schools in 1960. He was a member of United Lutheran Church, Scribner Volunteer Fire Department and Sportsman's Club. Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, Cheryl (Mrs. Mike) Hartwell of Ames and Marilyn (Mrs. Ronald) Benedict of Tabor, Iowa; a son, Kenneth (and wife, Jean) Tonjes of Hooper; two brothers, Clarence (and wife, Annie) Tonjes of Needles, Calif. and Norman (and wife, Norma) Tonjes of Scribner; two sisters, Grace Gunderson of Lyons and Valenda (Mrs. Donald) Poppe of Scribner; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two sisters. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at United Lutheran Church in Scribner with the Rev. Susan Butler officiating. Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. with family receiving friends 6:30-8 p.m., both Thursday at Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in rural Hooper. Memorials have been established to Scribner Volunteer Fire Department and Scribner Rescue Squad.
