Description	:	Obituary From Ottumwa Courier, August 26, 1985: Van N. "Dyke" Miller, 73, of 532 Burrhus died at 6:40 p.m. Aug. 23, 1985, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Davis County to John Henry and Alma Carter Miller. He spent most of his life in Ottumwa. He married Ithel V. Pottorff Sept. 7, 1940, in Lancaster, Mo. He worked for Barker's Poultry Equipment before and after a stint in the Navy in 1943-45. He served aboard the USS Steamer Bay in the South Pacific and received seven battle scars.... He was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Davis County to John Henry and Alma Carter Miller. He spent most of his life in Ottumwa. He married Ithel V. Pottorff Sept. 7, 1940, in Lancaster, Mo. He worked for Barker's Poultry Equipment before and after a stint in the Navy in 1943-45. He served aboard the USS Steamer Bay in the South Pacific and received seven battle scars. He was later employed at John Deere, retiring June 1, 1974. He was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church, which he helped build, and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Barbara Mentzer of Dawson, Beverly Bowling of Muncie, Ind., and Joan Young of Lake Park, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Bessie Dillon of Ottumwa, Nellie Staats of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Mary Howard at Medford, Ore. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. The service will be at 1 p.m. today at Bethany Baptist Church, the Rev. Richard Qualls officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Bethany Baptist Church. Shrine of Memories Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
