FATHER AND SON ARE DROWNED IN BIG SIOUX RIVER Rowboat Is Overturned Saturday Evening--Body Of Vance Hunter Found Vance Hunter, 48, prominent farmer of Sioux township and his 12-year-old son, Wiliam (Billy), figured in a double drowning tragedy in the Big Sioux river a short distance from their home early Saturday evening. At about 6 o'clock Mr. Hunter and son went to a point where Rock creek empties into the Sioux and got into the row boat and were supposed to have been trying to pull up a trap net they had located in the river, as the stream was rapidly rising from the frequent rains. Evidently the boat was accidently overturned and both of them were thrown into the deep water. When they did not return to the house at a given time, Mr. Hunter's wife went to the river to look for them. As they were nowhere in sight she became alarmed and notified Mr. Hunter's father, Dale Hunter, and neighbors and they began a search but without results. Le mars and Sioux City officials were notified and they took charge of the search Sunday morning. Several people went down from Akron also to join in the search. Vance Hunter's body was recovered from the water at about 1 p.m. Sunday at a point 300 or 400 feet downstream from the mouth of Rock creek. The boy's body had not ben recovered up to this (Thursday) afternoon but watch is being kept constantly along the swollen stream. The empty rowboat was found later in the river near North Riverside, Sioux City. Vance Hunter was born in Sioux township, Plymouth county, Iowa, July 8, 1895, and had lived there all his life engaging in farming, their place being on Primary 12. Surviving him are his widow, Hazel; his father Dale Hunter, a resident there more than seventy years and four sisters, Miss Nettie Hunter, of Sioux township; Mrs. Mabel Cooper, of Sioux City; Mrs. Hazel Lindborg, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Blanche Rouch, of Atlantic, Iowa. Funeral services for Mr. Hunter and a memorial service for his son were held Tuesday aftrernoon at the Nelson-Berger chapel in Sioux City. Mr. Hunter's burial was in Logan Park cemetery there.
