Informant was Jim Milligan, 109 W. 34rd Street, Villisca Velda Florence Cooney, 99, was born to Thomas and Nellie Firkins Van Alstine on August 12, 1897, at Guss. She died May 27, 1997, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Care Center. She was married to Earl M. Cooney Feb. 17 1921. They lived on a farm until 1934 when he lost his eye sight. They lived in the Guss community until 1942 when they purchased a home and moved to Villisca. She was a member of the Villisca United Methodist Church Mrs. Cooney was preceded in death by her husband in 1965- sisters Mamie, Mrs. Faye Milligan and Mrs. Fern Eeleston and brothers Glen and Joe. She is survived by nephews, nieces and cousins. Graveside services were held May 29 at the Villisca Cemetery with the Rev. Clark Finehout officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Villisca Senior Citizens Center or the United Methodist Church.
