Description	:	Velma Bertha Sophia (Zitterich) Plautz, the daughter of John Henry (Hank) and Amelia (Nachtigal) Zitterich, was born June 23, 1918, in Graettinger, Iowa, and died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Velma's family moved shortly after her birth to a farm outside of Terril, Iowa. She received her education in Terril and graduated in 1936. After high school Velma worked in the Terril Post Office. Read More	Velma Bertha Sophia (Zitterich) Plautz, the daughter of John Henry (Hank) and Amelia (Nachtigal) Zitterich, was born June 23, 1918, in Graettinger, Iowa, and died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Velma's family moved shortly after her birth to a farm outside of Terril, Iowa. She received her education in Terril and graduated in 1936. After high school Velma worked in the Terril Post Office. She married Alfred Louis Plautz of Milford, Iowa, on Nov. 9, 1941, in Terril, with Willard Zitterich and Helen Plautz as witnesses. They lived the first six months in Montebello, Calif., where Al worked as a welder and mechanic. Because it was war time, Al was eligible for the Selective Service Draft and so Velma and he returned to Iowa. After returning to Iowa, they bought the welding business in Pocahontas. After eight years of hard work and long work days, the business was sold. Al and another gentleman then built the first propane gas plant known as Allied Bottled Gas Company in Pocahontas. The business was later sold to Northern Propane Gas Company and Al continued to work there as a manager until he retired in 1978. Velma was very active in the Pocahontas community. She was both a homemaker and worked outside the home. Her career included working as an office manager for the Production Credit Association and administrative work at Northern Propane Gas Company. A member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, she and Al were superintendents for the Sunday school for over 20 years and served in many capacities including greeters, church council, and bible study. Velma and Al assisted in the search for the first hospital administrator for the Pocahontas Hospital and Velma helped organize the Hospital Womens Auxiliary in 1966 of which she served as President in 1969. Throughout her life she spent a lot of her time volunteering for the community. Velma loved making quilts and gifted them to those she loved. She was an avid Cubs and Cyclones fan, Bridge player, loved to travel, and most of all enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Velma is survived by a son, a daughter, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother, three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Alfred, her parents, three brothers, Everett, Willard and Marvin, six sisters, Maleta, Dorothy, Liela, Lucille and infant twin sisters. Funeral services were held Nov. 2 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas. Powers Funeral Home, Pocahontas, was in charge of arrangements. [Contributed by NLColes.]
