Velma was born December 25, 1914, in Near Cedar Bluff, IA to Alexander Achenbach and Mary (Schut) Achenbach. Velma married Harry Hegarty on June 4, 1932 in Stanwood, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Stanwood Union Church, Iowa, with Pastor Phil Leipold officiating. Burial will follow at Stanwood Cemetery. Velma married Harry Hegarty on June 4, 1932 in Stanwood, Iowa. She and Harry farmed together near Stanwood, retiring in 1974. They traveled and spent winters in Arizona. She loved arts and crafts and spent hours gardening, crocheting, quilting, ceramics, and oil painting. She was a member of Eastern Star, Kings Daughters, Cedar County Homemakers, Tipton Garden Club, and the Stanwood Union church. Velma is survived by 2 Daughters, Sarah (Sally) Gorman of Cedar Rapids, Sharon Fall (Bill Heldt) of Olin; 12 grandchildren, 2 foster grandsons, 12 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; Daughter-in-Law: Judith Hegarty of North Canton, Ohio, nieces and nephews. She is proceeded in death by parents, husband of 74 years, 2 sons, Thomas and Forrest Hegarty, foster son Paul Shepard, 2 grandsons, 2 sons-in-laws Charles Gorman and Leo Fall Jr., brothers Earl, Charles and Walter Achenbach, sisters Beulah Jones, Nola Howard, Mildred Dice and Clara Messner.
