Description	:	VELMA LETHA VAUGHN POSTON Velma Poston, a longtime resident of Chico, has joined her Harvey on 21 December 2016. She was born in Rock, Kansas on March 22, 1916. Her family moved to California in 1918. They started in Watsonville, moving to Los Gatos, to Bayless and then settling in Chico, CA. Her talent on the piano started at a very early age of three. The programs varied to include piano trios, violin trios,... Read More	VELMA LETHA VAUGHN POSTON Velma Poston, a longtime resident of Chico, has joined her Harvey on 21 December 2016. She was born in Rock, Kansas on March 22, 1916. Her family moved to California in 1918. They started in Watsonville, moving to Los Gatos, to Bayless and then settling in Chico, CA. Her talent on the piano started at a very early age of three. She performed with her sisters' in the "Vaughn Sister's Quartet" for churches and community affairs which helped the family financially before and during the 1930 Depression. The programs varied to include piano trios, violin trios, musical reading etc. She entered many Northern California piano contests. She was a big part of the beginnings of the KHSL, radio station in 1935. She played a part as the program director, studio accompanist playing both classical and popular music and was the "Sunshine Girl". She had a talent of transposing songs at random to suit each voice. She also played at the 1939 World's Faire at Treasure Island. She met Harvey Poston at the music department of the Yuba City Junior College. They married in June 1941. She worked typing requisitions at the Sand Point Naval Air Station; while Harvey was station there during WWII. During their many years together, they brought their love of music together by performing in a small combo. They performed for senior citizens at the Oakmont Retirement Community and the Peg Taylor Center along with other community affairs. She produced and played for countless Valentine Day programs at the First Christian Church. She and Harvey adopted Marty Poston at 3 days old. At the time, they were not aware of his mental disabilities. Luckily for Marty, and in spite of the situation, they continued to care for him and give him the love he needed. She sold memberships for community concerts, was the treasurer for the local March of Dimes and took door-to-door donations for the United Crusade. While Marty was a student, Velma received a PTA life membership for her volunteer work with the special education classes. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Harvey, and her father, Perry Augustus Vaughn; mother, Daisy Dean Smith and sister's Venita, Geneva and Zerita. Survivors include son, Marty Poston, of Chico, six nieces and one nephew. Graveside services at Glen Oak Memorial Park will be at a later date. Published in Chico Enterprise-Record on Jan. 1, 2017
