Velma, a member of the Corning Church of Christ, graduated from Corning High School in 1926 and lived most of her life in Corning, Prescott, and Nodaway areas. James, daughter of Perry and Martha James, born August 16, 1909 in Corning, Iowa, passed away October 14, 1979 in her home in Nodaway, Iowa after a lengthy illness. Velma, a member of the Corning Church of Christ, graduated from Corning High School in 1926 and lived most of her life in Corning, Prescott, and Nodaway areas. A previous marriage resulted in the birth of five children. On August 29, 1958, she was united in marriage with Floyd A. Johnson of Lincoln, Nebraska and lived in Lincoln until retirement in 1967, when they returned to Prescott, Iowa. A move to Nodaway was made in 1975. Velma was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Bernard and Milton James and a son-in-law, Bruce Marsh. She is survived by her husband, Floyd; three sons, Raymond and Evelyn Thomas of Corning, Iowa; Gary and Judy Thomas, Eldon J. and Terri Thomas, both of Phoenix, Arizona; two daughter, Mrs. Betty Marsh of Villisca, Iowa and Shirley and Jim Sperry of Des Moines, Iowa; one step daughter, Helen and Harold Heller of Lincoln, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 14 great grand children. Also surviving are two brothers, Donald James of Prescott, Iowa and Clarence James of Ottumwa; six sisters, Anna King and Dorothy Adams of Corning, Ruth Day and Dessie Avonx of Fairfield, Francis Larson of Villisca, and Grace Clinton of Des Moines, Iowa. Some of her happiest times were spent with her family. Services were held Tuesday, October 16, 1979 at the Wolfe Funeral Home of Villisca, Iowa with Rev. Don Brilley officiating. Music was provided by Mable Dunn, organist, Dorothy Fleagle, soloist, who was accompanied by Barbie Messer. Musical selections were “How Great Thou Art,” “Peace in The Valley” and “One Day At A Time.” Flower bears were Eleanor McMans and Margaret Shipley. Casket bearers were Jeffry Thomas, George Marsh, Steven Marsh, Terry Davis, Tom Marsh, and Richard Dyer. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery.
