Her next door neighbor Pauline Votipka, discovered the body when she called at the home at the request of Mrs. Carlson’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Ward, who had tried several times Wednesday to reach her by phone. Death is thought to have occurred in the early morning hours Wednesday. Mrs. Carlson was seen by neighbors Tuesday evening. Her Wednesday mail was still in the box. She had lived alone since the death of her husband, Fred, just three months before. Her health had not been good but she had been about her usual activities Tuesday. Velma May Wythers, daughter of James and Eva B. Wythers, was born November 12, 1893, near Fairmont, Neb. She passed away July 28, 1965. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Eva B. Wythers, one sister, Alma, a brother, Loyd, two sons, James and Maurice, and her husband Fred who passed away April 29 of this year. She attended country school until she moved to Geneva with her parents when she was 13 years old, graduating from Geneva high school in 1913. Velma attended the University of Nebraska for two years. Velma was united in marriage to Fred Carlson of Lincoln May 29, 1915, and they made their home in Lincoln three years. Two sons, James and Maurice, were born to this union. Both are deceased. In 1918 the family moved to a farm in Madison township, near Burress, where they lived 23 years. While on the farm she joined the Evergreen Woman’s Club of Exeter, in which she was an active member until she moved to Geneva. The family moved to Geneva and lived in Velma’s girlhood home. She joined the Geneva Township club, to which she belonged at the time of her passing. Velma was a member of the congregational church of Geneva and was a conscientious church worker for many years. She had a very deep faith in her Savior and loved to read her Bible and religious books. She leaves to mourn her passing her sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Ward, her children and their families, besides numerous cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Kritner-Farmer funeral home in Geneva at 10 a. m. Saturday, July 31. Rev. Donald M. Cassidy of Exeter officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Johnson sang “In the Garden” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Mrs. Willard Foster was accompanist. Pallbearers were Eugene Betka, Melvin Kuska, Richard Manning, Wilson Miller, Richard Reinsch and Carl Schneider. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 5 August 1965 page 9.
