Verna Celia Winter Kennedy was born Oct 30, 1906, in Grant, Ia, to John and Laura Gasson Winter. She died Sept 26, 1999, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center. She moved to Villisca when she was five years-old. She graduated from Villisca High school in 1925, and taught in rural schools before graduating from Iowa State Teachers College. She taught in Dallas Center until her marriage to Kenneth Kirk (Kay) Kennedy in 1932. They lived in Oklahoma City where he had a pipeline construction company. She sang with the Oklahoma Choral Society, "The Mother Singers Quartet", which appeared on local television, as well as her church choir. She was a devoted Camp Fire Girls Leader and in 1953, was named one of the counties most outstanding leaders of girls. She was also president of the P.T.A. In 1962 Verna and Kay returned to Iowa to farm south of Nodaway. She was a member of the Nodaway Methodist Church and enjoyed activities centered around the church and the Villisca Good Samaritan Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1991, two brothers and four sisters. She is survived by son K.D. Kennedy and wife Cathie, Tucson, Az, and daughter Carol Jo Williams and husband J.D., Washington, D.C. Also two grandchildren: Walter H.
