Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, March 31, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton. Rev. Keith Putney and Rev. L.J. Hartley will officiate. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. Verna Marguerite Tell was born on May 14, 1916, in rural Dayton, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Elsie (Waters) Tell. She attended schools in the area of her birth graduating with the Dayton High School class of 1934. Verna was united in marriage to Earl Roy Larson on June 8, 1941, at the United Methodist Church in Dayton, Iowa. Earl served his country in the United States Army during WWII and during that time Verna lived in Kansas where she was employed by Boeing Aircraft where she stitched the fabric on aircraft wings. After the war, Verna and Earl returned to Dayton where Verna was a homemaker and a backup driver for Earl's Star Route, delivering mail to the towns of Dayton, Otho, Lehigh, Burnside and Fort Dodge. Earl and Verna owned and operated the Dodger Motel in Fort Dodge from 1960 until 1975. Earl passed away on February 24, 1975, and Verna returned to Dayton where she worked part time at the Clover Farm Store/Dayton Community Grocery until 2001. Verna was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dayton where she was active in many church activities. She also belonged to the Women's Relief Corps, was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteering at the Grandview Health Care Center in Dayton. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing items for her family members. Survivors include her son, Luther "Skip" Larson and his wife, Clare Smith-Larson of Altoona, Iowa; three grandchildren, Alaire (Tim) Nielsen of Ruthven, Iowa, Shawn (Richard) Gilson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Lon (Shelby) Larson of Dayton, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Cathryn and Ian Gilson; two sisters, Marjorie Iles and E. Adeline Eslick of Dayton, Iowa; and three brothers, G. Wayne (Marilyn) Tell and Dick (Erma) Tell of Dayton, Iowa, and Keith (Phyllis) Tell of Weslaco, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl Larson; two brothers, Robert Tell and Gerald Tell; and a nephew, Gregory Iles. Memorials may be left to the United Methodist Church in Dayton.
