She was the widow of Arnold “Arnie” Boehnke. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Henry, SD. Eric Hartzell will officiate. Verna was born in Gibbon, MN, to Mary and John Burdorf on July 16, 1920. She was raised on the family farm with her older brother, Wilbert, and younger sister, Dellora. Both have passed away. She attended the small one room school building until she graduated from high school. They were taught in both German and English. Verna met the love of her life, Arnold “Arnie” Gustav Boehnke, in 1940, at a dance. They were married June 22, 1941. Arnie joined the U.S. Navy, during World War II. Verna lived with her parents while he was away on duty. They had one son, Gary John, on August 15, 1942, in Minneapolis, MN. Verna worked for Walgreens in Minneapolis until they moved to Phoenix, AZ. She worked at Camelback High School as the school secretary. In 1958, they moved to Covina, CA, and she maintained a position as school secretary in West Covina at Edgewater High School. She recalled the many years that she added all the credits for the seniors by hand to assure their graduation requirements were met and who would be the top graduating seniors for each class. She would laugh when discussing how these are done by computers now. Verna continued working for schools when they moved north to Walnut Creek and Alameda, CA. She retired in 1983. Verna was a faithful Lutheran church member throughout her life. She was a talented seamstress, loved quilting especially with the ladies at her church in Alameda. The quilts she made for all the grandchildren, nieces and nephews were special gifts, 63 quilts in all. She also knitted and finished many homemade items. She visited Europe when her son was stationed in Germany and she was hooked on travel. After Arnie died, she toured alone to Germany many times, most of Europe several times and a special trip to South Africa with her sister and brother-in-law. She also traveled to Russia twice and was so excited about all her adventures. She moved to Kennewick, WA, to be close to her son and grandsons. Verna lived in Kennewick for 24 years and enjoyed attending graduations, weddings and numerous other activities with her family. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed all the family events shared together over the years. Her final years were spent at Parkview Assisted Living. Verna is survived by her son, Gary (Bonnie) Boehnke; three grandsons: Michael (Taylor), Matthew (Dawn) and William (Michele); seven great-grandchildren: Ryland, Mallory, Jordan, Matthew, Brandon, Emery and Skyler; her niece, Mary Burdorf; her sister-in-law, Anita (Carlos) Abraham, and family; two brothers-in-law: Martin Lohmiller and family and Robert (Bonnie) Boehnke and family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Parkview for the wonderful care and love offered to Verna over the past three years. They would also like to thank the staff at Trios General Hospital, Pastor Vaughn Vogel, Dr. Datta and his staff, Dr. Kohan and the wonderful staff of care providers at Hospice House in Kennewick. A special thank you to Curtis McGary at Mueller’s Funeral Home for getting her home to Henry, SD, for a memorial service.
