Collins, 91, of Miller, S.D, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001 at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 24 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with the Revs. Brian Jones and Beth Kelsey-Englemann officiating. Reck Funeral Home, Miller, was in charge of arrangements. Verne James Collins was born June 3, 1910 in Glendale Township, Hand County, to Harrison and Marie (Burrell) Collins. He attended grade school in south Hand County and graduated from Miller High School in 1928. He spent his entire life in Hand County, with the exception of a few seasons he worked in California in an olive factory and a lumber yard. Always interested in athletics, he was captain of the football and basketball teams his senior year in high school. An avid hunter and fisherman, he spent many enjoyable hours with friends participating in these sports. Upon the death of his father in 1939, he took over the management and later the ownership of the family farm. In 1942, he married Irene Carpenter Sheldon and they continued to live on the farm until they retired and moved to Miller in 1967. While living in Glendale Township, he served on the township board and the school board. Being interested in aviation, he learned to fly and purchased his own plane, and for twenty years operated a crop spraying business from his farm home. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, Budget Committee and Stewardship Committee. He served as a Hand County Commissioner for twelve years. He was a member of the Miller Country Club and, in his later years, enjoyed playing golf. Survivors include his wife, Irene, of Miller; two daughters, Verna (Peter) Steckel of Katy, Texas and Marlene (John) Blanksma of Tujunga, Calif.; one son-in-law, Ronald Blachford of Miller; five grandchildren, Ronette (Steve) Stewart of Ft. Pierre, Mark (Belinda) Blachford of Sioux Falls, Jason (Jenny) Blachford of Watertown, Laurie Blanksma of Tujunga, Calif. and Timothy Steckel, serving with the armed forces; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Stewart of Mitchell, John Stewart of Ft. Pierre, and Keith and Hannah Blachford of Sioux Falls; and one sister, Vera Kenner of Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Marilyn Blachford; and one granddaughter, Johnelle Blanksma Newsome.
