Description	:	Verne S. Hendricks, 100 of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Verne was born on January 30, 1915, in Clay County, South Dakota, to Wesley Silas Hendricks and Vera Marie Curtis. His family included brothers, Dale and Tommy, and a sister, Norma Jean. They grew up on a working farm, and the children attended Star Prairie, one-room school, taught by their Aunt Wilma Curtis. Hendricks, 100 of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Verne was born on January 30, 1915, in Clay County, South Dakota, to Wesley Silas Hendricks and Vera Marie Curtis. His family included brothers, Dale and Tommy, and a sister, Norma Jean. They grew up on a working farm, and the children attended Star Prairie, one-room school, taught by their Aunt Wilma Curtis. After high school, Verne joined the United States Army and served his country in World War II and was stationed in Italy, England, Africa, Germany, and France. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor at the end of the war, he was stationed at Ft. Belvor, VA where he trained in security. He was sent to Hiroshimo, Japan as a Prov. Sergeant. Upon leaving the Armed forces, he returned his home in Clay County to continue farming. He also worked as a Chief of Police for the University of South Dakota. He married Myrtle Vivian Strand on August 15, 1957, in Mitchell, South Dakota. They did not have children of their own, but they offered many hours of entertainment to their two nieces, Jan Hendricks, and Sue Johnson, and their nephew, Tom Johnson. Jan recalls Verne teaching her how to milk cows and also pulling her in a sled in the snow behind his tractor. Myrtle preceded him in death on April 17, 2006, and is buried in the Hendricks’ family plot at Bluff View Cemetery in Vermillion. Memorial services for Verne will be at a later date.
