Description	:	Son of Charles Robert Hoffman & Vena Marie Casner Vernon Clare Hoffman, 88, of Independence died Tuesday, June 12 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, of congestive heart failure. He was born April 12, 1919 in Walker, son of Charles Robert Hoffman and Vena Marie Casner. He married Amy Jane Garwood on August 26, 1942 in Evergreen, Colorado. She died May 17, 2004. Read More	Son of Charles Robert Hoffman & Vena Marie Casner Vernon Clare Hoffman, 88, of Independence died Tuesday, June 12 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, of congestive heart failure. He was born April 12, 1919 in Walker, son of Charles Robert Hoffman and Vena Marie Casner. He married Amy Jane Garwood on August 26, 1942 in Evergreen, Colorado. She died May 17, 2004. Mr. Hoffman graduated from Urbana High School, Urbana, in 1935, and at age 16 enrolled at the University of Iowa and worked his way through college as a janitor, dishwasher, and researcher for Professor William J. Peterson. He received a bachelor's degree in 1939, a Juris Doctorate in 1941 and was admitted to the bar in 1941. He was a lifelong farmer and cattle breeder. He served as director of the American Brangus Breeders association, and the Iowa and American Simmental Associations. He was one of the founders of St. Paul Dressed Beef and Northern States Beef of Omaha. He was a former director of Security State Bank and at the time of his death, a director of Independence Bancshares, Inc. Survivors include two sons, Jay Ranor of Independence, and C. Dean "Lucky" (Kay); a daughter, Susan Marie White of Aurora; four granddaughters; and four great-granddaughters; and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Hoffman of Walker, and Lorene Garwood of Evergreen. Preceeded in death by two brothers, Charles and James; and a sister, Jean. Services 11:00 a.m. Monday at Church of Christ United, Winthrop, with burial in Spencer's Grove Cemetery near Walker. Public visitation from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Fawcett's Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Winthrop.
