For Vernie, everything has its season. Vernie Page is best described as vibrant and inquisitive. He had a thirst for knowledge and a passion for adventure. In the summer, it was the season for golfing, gardening, and grilling. To quench his thirst, he'd read every book to improve his skill in these areas. During warm weather, it was also racing season. Vernie loved the stocks and hit every raceway in Iowa. One of the highlights was a trip to Indy that he fondly remembers. If he could have, he would have been down in with the pit crews, asking them questions and showing his appreciation for their talents. In the colder months, it was time to go dancing with Darlene. He loved the big bands, and spent many nights at the Ponderosa Ballroom, the Electric Park, or the Grand Ballroom in Dubuque, swinging to the sounds of Les Brown, Larry O'Brien, Bill Tole, and Jan Garber. Vernie has the distinction of being the New Venue Big Band's number one fan. During breaks, he'd always go up to the musicians, talk to them, and show his appreciation. For Vernie, the winter months brought another season: woodworking. He had every tool, every book, and every type of wood he needed to feed his passion. Consider yourself very fortunate if you possess a clock, knickknack, cabinet, or shelf stamped with the words "Handcrafted by Vernie Page." When it came to family, it was always the season. Vernie became a grandparent for the first time when he married Darlene. When Carlye was brought home from the hospital, she was placed in his hands, and as he very carefully held her up, he said, "I don't believe I've ever done this before." He was 69. Little did Vernie realize that the next 17 years would be spent traipsing to Iowa City over and over, to every track meet, recital, dance, orchestra, band, choir, and show choir event his 6 grandchildren were in. And as always, he'd stop and tell the directors or coaches how much he appreciated what they did for the kids. During his final season, Vernie was frustrated by his growing lack of mobility, which kept him from tending to all his passions. During the last weeks, he still shared his vibrancy and concern for others. As his family began to feel the despair of loss, he'd smile and say, "brace up." And so we will. Vernie wouldn't have it any other way. Vernie K. Page, 86, of Waterloo died at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home on Thursday, March 23, 2006. He was born December 24, 1919, in Waterloo, son of John and Mae Dunn Page. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1940. From 1942 to 1946, Vernie served his country during WWII as a Sergeant in the US Army. He married Phyllis Berghaus on July 7, 1947, and she died on May 6, 1988. On February 26, 1991, Vernie and Darlene Allen were married at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He worked at John Deere for 30 years and was a Computer Operator when he retired in 1982. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion -- 60 years. Vernie is survived by his wife Darlene of Waterloo; two stepsons: Bob Allen of Phoenix, Arizona, and Brad and his wife Twylla Allen of Iowa City; and stepdaughter Lu Ann and her husband Roger Hileman of Iowa City. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Andrea and her husband George Hileman Eganhouse, Rachel Hileman, Carlye Hileman, Jon Allen, Joey Allen, and JoHanna Allen; great-grandchild Everett Eganhouse; and brother Keith Page of Nevada, Iowa.
