Read More	SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR VERONA BENGTSON, 84 Verona Elnora Eugenia Bengtson, daughter of William and Nora (Skalberg) Westman, was born October 24, 1911, at Essex, Page County, Iowa, and passed away on September 29, 1996, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Verona grew up in the Essex area graduating from the Essex Schools. Before her marriage she worked at Henry Fields in Shenandoah, Iowa. On June 30, 1931, she was united in marriage to Samuel A. Bengtson, and to this union four children were born, John, Jim, Joe, and Rita. After their marriage she lived on the family farm where she spent the rest of her life. Before her marriage, Verona was a member of the Mission Covenant Church. After her marriage she joined the First Presbyterian Church. She started playing the piano in church when she was 12 years old. She played piano and organ at the Presbyterian Church for 35 years and was active in all areas of the church. She was honored by receiving the "Outstanding Women's Award" from the Presbyterian women. She was active in Ladies Circle, Culture Club, Bible Study, Birthday club, and her Rummikub Group. Verona was the oldest of five daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Marjorie Westman, Merine Westman, and Loretta Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Sam, three sons, John Bengtson and his wife Lucille, Jim Bengtson and his wife Shirley, Joe Bengtson and his wife Donna, all of Essex, one daughter Rita Drake of Bagley, Iowa, one sister, Genevie Rowe and her husband Bill of Summerfield, Florida, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Services were held from the First Presbyterian Church in Essex, Tuesday, October 1, 1996, at 2 PM, with the Rev. Rick Sleyster giving the words of comfort. Organist was Pam Allumbaugh and soloist was Rhonda Royer. Musical selections were "He Touched Me" and "He'll Understand." Ushers were Glen Confer and Jack Farwell. Attending the memory register was Eloise Turner and caring for the flowers were Carolyn Confer and Catherine Ross. Casket bearers were Larry Glassgo, Dick Johnson, Harve Johnson, Terry Johnson, Larry McClintock and Don Royer. Interment was in the Essex Cemetery, Second Addition, First Row, Lot 13.
