Read More	EXPLOSION WHEN STOVE IS LIGHTED Mrs. Wm Westman of Essex and Daughter Also Burned in Rescuing Girl From Burning Home Miss Marjorie Westman, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Westman of Essex, died at the Hand hospital at 2 o'clock this morning from burns received at her home last night in an explosion of the gasoline tank on the gas stove. Her mother and sister, Loretta were also burned severely. The tragedy took place about 5:30 at the home a block and a half due south of the lumberyard. Mrs. Westman and three daughters, Loretta, Marie, and Genevieve were at home and evidently were just starting preparations for supper. The father was at work 4 1/2 miles north of town. The women had just filled the gasoline tank and Mrs. Westman started to light the fire, but the generator did not work and the daughter, Marjorie, said, "Let me start it." The tank was leaking from a defective valve and when she attempted to start the generator, a terrific explosion followed and the flaming fluid completely enveloped the young woman. The mother and sister, Loretta grabbed her and dragged her onto the porch where she writhed in agony, her clothing completely burned from her. The mother was badly burned upon the face and arms and the sister also suffered burns. The explosion was so great that it blew the windows out of the house. The house is only a short distance from the fire station and the business district and in a very few moments firemen and others were on hand to help. The smoke in the house was so thick that men could not stay in it long, but the carried out clothing and furniture. Water was turned on and the major part of the house was saved, the damage from the blaze being mostly in the kitchen where the explosion took place and the attic. Local physicians gave first aid to the injured and Marjorie was taken with all speed to the Hand Hospital at Shenandoah, where all possibly was done for her, but she lived only a few hours. Mr. Westman is a building contractor. Another daughter of the Westman's is Mrs. Sam Bengtson, living north of Essex. Loretta is an employee of the telephone office. Marjorie was a graduate of the Essex high school two years ago. This is the second time that Essex was visited by a tragedy of this kind. Mrs. F. W. Stromberg and daughter, having perished in a fire at their home twenty-four years ago when a kerosene lamp exploded. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the Mission Church in Essex with the Rev. H. Hultman officiating. Burial will be made in the Essex Cemetery.
