Read More	HOPEWELL MATRON DIED LAST SATURDAY Was Scion Of Prominent Family Was A Relative of Stephen A. Douglas Mrs. Victoria Evans, a prominent matron of the Hopewell section, died early Saturday morning in the McCready Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for several weeks, at the age of 75 years. She was born in Kinsdale, on the Potomac River, in Westmoreland county, Va., the daughter of the late John and Alice Douglas Cole. Her family was widely known on the Western Shore for the important part it played in the Civil War. Her mother was a close relative of Stephen A. Douglas, the "little giant," presidential candidate who ran against Abraham Lincoln. She married William Lawson Evans, of Smiths Island, and for some years they made their home on the Island. In 1911 with their family they came to Crisfield and settled in the Hopewell section, where Mr. Evans engaged in the grocery business and farming until he retired shortly before his death in 1932. Mrs. Evans was a lady of admirable character, a homemaker, a good neighbor and friend. Her sweet and gentle manner endeared her to everyone, and while she had not enjoyed good health for some little time, she managed to keep in touch with many of her friends, and they all enjoyed her companionship. Funeral services were held in the Bradshaw Funeral Parlors Monday afternoon at 2.00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Melvin E. Wheatley. Interment was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Bearers were William H. Bradshaw, William Franklin, John Long, Wilbur Nelson, Harold Cullen and William Bradshaw. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Frank (Addie) Nelson, of Hopewell, Mr. Hance Evans, of Baltimore, and Mr. Leonard Evans of Hopewell.
