Hickling, who lived on route 10, Emporia, died Monday evening in the Newman Memorial County Hospital following a long sickness. Mrs. Hickling first entered the hospital October 8 and underwent an operation. She was able to return to her home on January 23 but had to enter the hospital again on March 21. Mrs. Hickling was born October 10, 1865, in Cass County, Ill. Her maiden name was Miss Vina E. Miller, and she was married January 25, 1882 to J. W. Hickling in Virginia, Ill. Mrs. Hickling had been to Kansas prior to that time with her parents but had returned to Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Hickling moved to Kansas January 9, 1884 and settled on a farm near Emporia. Mrs. Hickling was a member of the Lang Methodist Church. She is survived by Mr. Hickling and five sons and daughters. The children are Miss Bessie Hickling and Mrs. Wilbur Burns, who live on route 10; Mrs. John E. Smith, of Lebo; Harrison Hickling, of Kansas City, Kan.; Mrs. Ralph Focht, of Rantoul. Three sisters and two brothers survive. They are: Mrs. Lurena Willey, of Arenzeville, Ill.; Mrs. Charles Chambers, of Bluff Springs, Ill.; Mrs. Sarah York and Seth Miller, of Beardstown, Ill.; Allen Miller, of Meredosia, Ill.; John O. Willey, a nephew, mail carrier on route 10, Emporia, and five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. J. W. Hickling, who lived on route 10, Emporia, and died Monday evening in Newman Memorial County Hospital, were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the First Methodist Church. Rev. M. DeWitt, of Reading, conducted the services assisted by the Rev. Mr. Woodson, of Hope, and the Rev. Mr. Wise, of Kansas City, Kan. Interment was made in Maplewood Cemetery. A male quartet composed of Louis Macy, Preston Macy, Rev. R. E. Jackson, and Rev. Luther Dillon sang, accompanied by Mrs. Wanda Bailey. Miss Esther Swart sang a solo, accompanied by Miss Ardene Phifer. The pallbearers were Gwyllm Jones, Edwin Jones, Archie Hanter, Fred Sickler, Charles Loomis, and James Pearson.
