Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Pierce City, Missouri, he was the son of the late James and Ellen McAvoy Maher. On May 17, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri, he married Gabriella Spelman. She preceded him in death on July 3, 1989. On Nov. 23, 1990, in Slater, he married Alice Johnson Grimes (died 1/24/2007); she survives of the home. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 78 in Slater. He was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and the University of Kansas City School of Pharmacy. He worked in pharmacies in Springfield, Columbia and Moberly. He owned and operated Maher Pharmacy in Slater from 1956 until his retirement in 1972. Surviving in addition to his wife are nine sons; three step-daughters; 19 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Howard (died 5/13/2013) of Lee's Summit and Agnes Heimlich (died 8/30/2011) of Harrisonville.
