Description	:	June 10, 1909: Vincent Highberger, the pioneer merchant of Westphalia, died of Bright's disease at Excelsior Springs, MO., Tuesday. His funeral will be held at St. Teresa Catholic church here Friday at 8:30 am Born in Germany on Jan 21, 1844, he was age 65y 4m 17d. As a very young man with his parents he came to America They spent many years in eastern Iowa, where on Feb 24, 1868 he married Elizabeth Herman hwo died Nov 11, 1906. to them 8 children were born 3 of whom survive, Fr. John Highberger of Louisburg, KS, Simon P and Theodor Highberger both of Westphalia In the fall of 1882 the family moved from Iowa to Kansas settling at this place. He at once engaged in the hardward and implement business in a small way and the business grew with the community. We don't suppose he has missed attending church a single morning unless very sick in the past twenty years. He also rung the Angelus morning, noon and eveining, always punctual. He owned the business, valuable farms, was a stockholder in and vice president of Westphalia State Bank. Frank Highberger was here to attend the funeral of his foster father, and Eddie Gorman of Wichita attended the funeral of his former guardian. His funeral was without a dought the largest ever held here.
