Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice. Mrs. Cordes was born Jan. 26, 1939, in Wolbach, the daughter of Charley and Irene (Galitz) Berney. She attended Wolbach High School, where she graduated in 1956. On Dec. 13, 1958 she was united in marriage to Richard Cordes in Marysville, Kan. The couple made their home northeast of Wolbach. To this union, four daughters were born, Dawn, Ronnette, Carmen and Deirdra. Mrs. Cordes was active in many different organizations. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, served as WELCA president, was circle chairman, and taught Sunday and Bible School in church. She also belonged to the Wolbach American Legion Auxiliary, Logan Ladies Aid, 4-mile Club, was a leader for American Junior Legion Auxiliary, served as chairman for the Cystic Fibrosis Bike-A-Thon, and was a past member of the Town and Country Club. Mrs. Cordes had worked at Head Start and she was a news reporter for the Wolbach Messenger for a number of years. She especially enjoyed being around her family and their activities, going on gambling trips a couple of times a year, reading, crossword puzzles and playing Yahtzee. Survivors include her husband, Richard Cordes of Wolbach; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Dawn and Ken Miller of Grand Island, Ronnette and Alan Schneider of Schuyler, Carmen Potratz of Wolbach and Deirdra and Kirk French of Hooper; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Joyce Berney of Wolbach; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Loyla and Ron Vogel of Davis, Calif., and Kathy and Charles Houtby of Wolbach; an aunt and uncle [Mary Galitz of Oakland, Iowa; and Herbert Galitz and his wife, Delores, of Hastings per another obit] brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald and Jody Cordes of Prosser, JoAnn Abboud of Naples, Fla., and LaVonna Berney of Hastings; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law; a brother, Galen Berney; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Cordes and Ronald Abboud.
