Irene L. Berney, daughter of Henry and Louise Anna Schomburg Galitz, was born March 13, 1917 at Albion. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural school District #36 in Nance County. She attended and graduated from the Wolbach High School. On June 18, 1938, she was united in marriage to Loyal "Charley" Berney at Nelson. The couple made their home in Wolbach all their married life. Mrs. Berney was a cook at the Wolbach Public Schools for 34 years. Mr. Berney died on July 16, 1983. Mrs. Berney continued to make her home in Wolbach until entering the Greeley Care Home on October 29, 2001. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach, Dorcas Circle, had taught Sunday School, and had been Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She enjoyed family get-togethers, playing cards, Yahtzee, baking, especially rolls and doughnuts, for her family and friends. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Joyce Berney of Wolbach, Galen and LaVon Berney of Hastings; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virgie and Richard Cordes of Wolbach, Kathy and Charles Houtby of Wolbach, and Loyla and Ron Vogel of Davis, California, 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Viola Silk of Elliott, Iowa; one brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Deloris Galitz of Hastings. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Loyal, grandson Kirby; two sisters, Dorothy Galitz and Maye Atwell, and two brothers, Emil and Raymond Galitz.
