CLATE McCLURE Virginia Ann McClure was born Dec. 7, 1880 in Quitman, Mo., the daughter of James F. and Nancy E. Carden; and died at Denver, Colo., July 22, 1970. She was married to Clate R. McClure May 30, 1905. He preceded her in death April 22, 1965. Her first son, James C. died at the age of 13. Mrs. McClure spent her childhood with her brother, Ira, and her sister Eva, both now deceased; on a farm near Alexandria, Nebr. She was educated in the public schools there and at Grand Island College. After her marriage, she and her husband Clate, lived in Schuyler, Nebr., and later near Winner, S.D., where they established a homestead on the open prairie. They lived on a farm near Pawnee City for a short time and then established a painting business. During the early thirties Mrs. McClure operated a news stand in addition to caring for a sizable family. She was known to be a most energetic and hardworking member of the community, a woman cast in the pioneer mold like so many other Nebraskans of her time. She was a member of, indeed her life was centered around, the First Baptist Church of Pawnee City. She is survived by three daughters, Katherine, Barbara, and Olive; one son, Thomas; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Interment was in the Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City, Nebraska.
