Foster Hance, 83, of of the Pella Regional Health Center Long Term Care Unit, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at the care center. Memorial services will be held Friday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. in the St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Thomas Burkhardt officiating. As with Vivian's wish, her body has been cremated, and burial of her cremated remains will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa following the memorial service. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. visitation will begin Thursday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present from 6-8 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ. She was born Feb. 23, 1923, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Herbert and Jesse Ellen Brubaker Worthy. She graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1940; she then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) for a short time. Following school, she worked as a nanny and housekeeper for many families in Grinnell. On June 25, 1943, she was united in marriage with Wilbur Foster, he died Oct. 29, 1966. Together they farmed east of Kellogg, and north of Grinnell. Vivian also managed Elmhurst Country Club in Oskaloosa. On May 13, 1974, she was united in marriage with Robert E. Hance, he died on April 16, 1997. Vivian managed Elmhurst Country Club for 26 years. She then managed the Fairfield Country Club for seven years, and lastly she owned and operated Vivian's Tea Room for eight years. Vivian delighted in having her grandchildren come and help her at her restaurant. In 1998, Vivian moved to Pella to the assisted living facility. She was a member of the St. Paul's Congregational United Church of Christ, PEO, and the Iowa Club Manager's Association. She enjoyed spending time with her family and preparing meals. Her family includes a daughter and her husband: Phyllis and Jim Danks of Pella; three sons: Bill (and Jean) Foster of Glendale, Ariz., Dale Foster of Des Moines, and David (Julie) Foster of Corydon; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife:, Curtis and Donna Worthy of Burlington; and three sisters: Charlotte (and Bob) Rudkin of Wichita, Kan., Adah (and Ernest) Hunziker of Pella, and Donna Holland of Newton. Besides her two husbands, Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; a son in law: Britt Podhajsky; four sisters: Darlene and Arlene Worthy in infancy, Francene Sears, and Marjorie Cloyed; and two brothers: Robert and Keith Worthy.
