He was born in the Townville Community of South Carolina, on his grandparent’s family Martin farm on June 2, 1924. Wallace was the son of the late John Fleming and Grace Martin Grantland of Anderson, SC who were bakers by trade. They had family connections with the American sports writing giant and philanthropist, Grantland Rice. As a grade schooler, he was able to take advantage of the first lip reading school in Columbia, South Carolina. Wallace was born with a congenital bilateral hearing loss which kept him from serving the country he so loved with an unwavering conviction of faith. Wallace graduated from McDuffie Boys High School in 1943 as an honor student and received additional degrees in mechanical drawing and machinery. Surviving is his beloved wife of sixty-five and a half years, Gladys (Hellams) Grantland, whom he adored and admired beyond reproach. He supported her throughout her sixty-three years of nursing service without fail. Their faithful and loving, godly marriage yielded three children: Wallene G. Thomas (Jeffrey) of Denton, TX, Virginia Hayes (Tom) of Burke, VA, and John Martin Grantland (Becky) of Columbia SC. Wallace’s beloved sister, Bobbie Grantland Rogers is deceased. Her husband is J. Harold Rogers of Easley, SC, whom he loved with the upmost admiration. His seven greatly loved and cherished grandchildren are: Anna Grace and Dwight J. Hayes; Amelia W. Torres (Hervey); T. Grantland Watkins (Grant); Grace, Liddy and William W. Grantland. There is one great grandchild; Milo Thomas Torres, his only great grandson. Wallace was full of Jesus’ love, integrity and grace. Deeply rooted in his Christian Faith, he was an intelligent, multi-talented consummate artist; reader and avid fisherman of the first order. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity of spirit and the freedom with which he shared himself, especially the wonderful, funny stories he shared with all who might listen. Wallace was a servant leader whether as an exceptionally dependable blood donor; many years of service at Anderson Hospital or serving for forty-eight years as a Sunday School teacher of three and four year olds at Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson, SC where he was a charter member. He owned and operated City Bakery in Anderson, South Carolina, for 42 years. The bakery was rich with a family heritage which he learned from his father, John, who was a master baker in WWI. He and his parents faithfully served the upstate of South Carolina with their immaculately baked goods and down home, friendly service. There will be a memorial service held in his memory at Denton Good Samaritan Village, 2500 Hinkle Dr, Denton. on Wednesday October 30, 2013 at 10:00 AM. The family will receive friends after the service in the Chapel. A second service will be held in South Carolina at Boulevard Baptist Church, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC at a date to be determined conducted by Dr. Johnny F. McKinney. The family will receive friends at the church following the service to celebrate his amazing example of a true lifelong servant of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. His family gives thanks to a many wonderful caregivers including: Dr. Raza Jafry, Dr. Terrence Moore; Faith Presbyterian Hospice; FBCD Charles Ramsey Sunday School Class, The FBCD Homebound Ministry; the nursing staff and caregivers in the Skilled Nursing Section of Denton Good Samaritan Village. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boulevard Baptist Church Preschool Fund; FBCD Homebound Ministries or Good Samaritan Denton Village.
