Description	:	Walter Hickman, son of John and Anna Nelson Hickman, was born November 28, 1888 near Leon and departed from this life February 12, 1958 at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 14 days. While still an infant, his parents moved to the Unity neighborhood where he spent his entire life. On January 21, 1914 [in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa] he was united in marriage to Stella [Gertrude] Surbaugh. To this union one son was born. On January 21, 1914 [in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa] he was united in marriage to Stella [Gertrude] Surbaugh. To this union one son was born. He was converted when a young man and united with the Unity Baptist church which he faithfully served all his life with his time and talents. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge at Lewisburg and had filled all the offices of the lodge and was a member of the Radiant Chapter of the Eastern Star of Humeston. He was one of the first Soil Conservation Commissioners of Wayne County and served for 12 years. Having been preceded in death by his father and mother he is survived by his wife, his son, Gerald, Five granddaughters, Barbara, Patricia, Eleanor, Virginia and Marilyn, ,three sisters, Mrs. Elma Breuer, Mrs. Ina Reed of Humeston, Mrs. Grace Rogers of Kansas City, Mo. as well as a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Wolf Funeral Home in Corydon Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. B. E. Nielsen, pastor of the Unity Baptist church, officiating. Mrs. Gilbert Garton sang accompanied by Mrs. Carl Bracewell at the piano. Flower girls were Coy Garton, Mrs. Vernita Snyder and Mrs. Velva Bell. Pallbearers were Roy Hart, Keifer Garton, George Pettigrew, W. F. Showalter, Leonard Fisher and Ralph Surbaugh. Interment was made in the Corydon Cemetery where final Masonic rites were made by the members of the Masonic lodge of Lewisburg, Mr. Kenneth Mitchell in charge. unknown newspaper
