Mr. Schwendemann passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington. Walter J. Schwendemann was born on March 5, 1899 at Burnside. He was the son of Robert and Margaret (Eultchi) Schwendemann. He attended the Burnside community schools and Tobin Business College in Fort Dodge. In 1908 Walter accepted a position as assistant cashier at the State Bank in Yetter, and a year later became assistant cashier at the First National Bank at Lehigh. He became cashier in 1925 and remained in this position until the bank closed in 1932. During World War I Walter served in the quarter master corps in Washington, D.C. After discharge from service he became cashier of the State Bank in Hubbard. Walter married Vera Winterfield of Radcliffe on December 21, 1920 in Des Moines. Walter became cashier of the State Bank of Aplington, where he served until retiring in 1972. He was a 76 year member of the Iowa Bankers Association. Walter was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Lehigh and a member of the Evangelical Church and American Legion. Mrs. Schwendemann passed away in 1974. Survivors include brothers, Vern Schwendemann and Dr. Roy Schwendemann, both of Fort Dodge, and several nieces and nephews.
