License issued July 10. ====================== The Nuckolls County Locomotive-Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, July 9, 2015; pg. 10 Lawrence area native and lifelong resident, Mr. Walter J. (Jack) Menke, 87, died Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska. A Rosary Prayer Service was held Monday evening, July 6, 2015, at Sacred Heart Church during which service the St. Stephen Council 1906 presented a crucifix to the family in recognition of Mr. Menke's long service. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Lawrence, with Father Thomas Bush Officiating. Assisting at the service were: Linda Ostdiek as Organist and Sherry Buescher as Song Leader; Acolyte was Don Mazour and Lector was Ken Kathman. Members of Jack's family carried offertory gifts to the altar during the Mass. The Knights of Columbus and the Kent Kailey Post #45 American Legion stood Honor Guard before the alter services. Serving as Pallbearers were: Chris Kohmetscher, Kyle Stroh, Kevin Kohmetscher, Virgil Brockman, Ryan Kohmetscher, and John Menke. Burial with Military Rites by Kent Kailey Post #45 were in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. A memorial has been established to be designated at a later date. Merten-Butler Mortuary, Blue Hill, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements. Walter was born on February 19, 1928 to Henry B. and Katherine (Knoop) Menke in Nuckolls County. He attended school through the eighth grade at the St. Stephen parish school. Walter served in the United States Army during the Korean War from March 1951 to December 1952 where he was on the front lines. Walter married Irene E. Hoelting on July 12, 1951 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church south of Lawrence. He farmed and raised hogs and cattle his entire life before moving into Lawrence and then to Blue Hill. Walter was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Kent Kailey Post #45 all of Lawrence, Nebraska and V.F.W. Post #10045 of Deweese, Nebraska. He had also been a member of the Lawrence Volunteer Fire Dept. from 1970-1996. Walter is survived by: two Sons, Ronald Menke, Lawrence, Nebraska and Wayne Menke, Grand Island, Nebraska; three Daughters, Karen (Mark) Kumke, Blue Hill, Nebraska, Sandy (David) Stroh, Shelton, Nebraska and Dorothy Crunick, Henderson, Nevada; one Sister, Martha Faimon, Lawrence, Nebraska; seven Grandchildren and ten Great Grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife, daughter-in-law, Cindy Menke, six Brothers, Leroy, Clarence, Gilbert, Aloysious, Elmer and Vernon; two Sisters, Evelyn Brockman and Ione Lipovsky.
