Description	:	Walter Lucas Gayle was born on February 8, 1878. As the only surviving son, he inherited "Edgewater" after his father's death in 1906 and farmed and raised his family there. On September 3, 1902, he married Minnie Vernan Garnett, daughter of William Garnett and Jane Jeter Allen of Cumberland County. Many happy summer days were spent there over the years by various cousins of various generations -- swimming on the sandbars off of Cousin Walter's point. Read More	Walter Lucas Gayle was born on February 8, 1878. As the only surviving son, he inherited "Edgewater" after his father's death in 1906 and farmed and raised his family there. On September 3, 1902, he married Minnie Vernan Garnett, daughter of William Garnett and Jane Jeter Allen of Cumberland County. Many happy summer days were spent there over the years by various cousins of various generations -- swimming on the sandbars off of Cousin Walter's point. Granddaughter Anne remembers walking and riding her bicycle through the woods [Cornwallis' Woods, between East River Road (where she lived) and North River Road (where Edgewater was)] and going crabbing off the bridge at Edgewater. Another special tradition were the family Christmas dinners. One of Walter's childhood/adult friends was Fred Parker, whose daughter, Frances Parker, called me shortly after seeing the earlier version of this book. Fred remembered that Robert, Cousin Walter's father, was Sheriff of Mathews County for awhile. Cousin Minnie taught school and was the principal at Peninsula School at Mobjack. She also taught Sunday School for many years. Cousin Walter died on October 2, 1955 and Cousin Minnie, on November 9, 1967. They are buried together at Providence Cemetery near Miles. Cousin Walter and Cousin Minnie had four children and were called "Papa Gayle" and "Nannie Gayle" by their many grandchildren.
