| Description | : | . Robert Billups "Bobby" Gayle was born on December 6, 1853. He farmed his father's estate, "Edgewater", which became his after the death of his mother, Lizzie, in 1896. (see photo) On January 21, 1875, he married Lucy Lee Diggs, daughter of William Diggs and Joice Ann Brooks. The picture at the right has been retouched. It had deteriorated badly so may not resemble Bobby exactly. According to a Gayle family friend and Mathews County records, Bobby was the sheriff of Mathews for a time.
