Description	:	Walter Preston Powers, a leading businessman and church and civic worker here for nearly 20 years, died unexpectedly at his home early last night. He was 59 years old. Read More	Walter Preston Powers, a leading businessman and church and civic worker here for nearly 20 years, died unexpectedly at his home early last night. He was 59 years old. He suffered an attack and died near the rear entrance to his home, where he had been working in his backyard. Mr. Powers had suffered a heart ailment for several years. It was in May of 1947, that he came here from Topeka and purchased a local grocery store that he had operated since as Powers IGA. After serving the public for several years in a location in the 100 block of West Main Street, he built the firm's present modern super-market building and moved to it in 1954. Before entering business here, he had been with Fleming Company, food distibutors, in Topeka since 1932. He previously had worked from 1930-1932 as a salesman for Ralston-Purina Company. Born September 16th, 1907 on a farm six miles west of Netawaka, he was the son of Jay Preston and Emma Jane Albright Powers. He was graduated from West Powhattan Grade School in 1922 and Wetmore High School in 1926. He received a degree in vocational agriculture from Kansas State University in 1930. At Kansas State he was a member of the Farm House fraternity; Alpha Zeta; Phi Kappa Phi, national scholastic honorary fraternity, and Ag Ec Club. He served his community in numerous positions, including President of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Rotary Club. An active church worker, he had been a member of the Powhattan Methodist church where he had joined as a small child, the Oakland Methodist church in Topeka and the Council Grove Methodist church. Here he had served his church as lay leader and in other positions and he had sung with the choir regularly. He was married to Alice Fern Clinkinbeard at Wetmore May 17, 1931. Mrs. Powers survives him as do a son, Captaincies. Norman Walter Powers and his wife; his father, Jay Powers of Whiting; an aunt, Mrs. Velma Anderson, of Horton and an uncle, Ben Albright of Holton. A daughter, Betty Jane, died in infancy. His son, who has just completed active duty service as a dental officer, and his wife had just arrived stateside from Alaska and were reached last night at Tacoma, Wash. They were to arrive here late today. Services will be Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock, at the Council Grove Methodist Church with Rev. Glen Amend in charge. Burial will be in the Netawaka Cemetery, where services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. Friends have started a fund for a permanent-type memorial in the Council Grove Methodist Church, and gifts for it are bing made to the treasurer of that church.
