His professional life was in part as superintendent of Boys' Welcome Hall in Brooklyn, NY, one of the original Boys' Clubs of America. As noted in the "Boys' Workers Roundtable", his brother Rev. Dr. Shaw (improper attribution to Robert, actually Edward Burns) of the Philadelphia's North Presbyterian Church presided over devotions at a regional conference in December, 1922.
