Description	:	~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Walter Gass was born in Columbus, Nebraska in 1897. He graduated from Columbus High School and later attended Grinnell College in Iowa for 2 years. He served in World War I in France. He received his degree at the University of Nebraska in 1922, and in 1925 married the former Betty Riddell. He was in the furniture business with a cousin in Columbus for several years before buying the furniture store in Seward from A. B. Chain in 1928. Gass Furniture became famous for the production of Linwood novelty items sold all over the United States. Gass was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Seward where he served as Elder, and in many Civic organizations, some of which were American Legion, Rotary and 4-H. Each year Mr. Gass would present a cedar chest to an outstanding 4-H girl. Gass retired about ten years ago and moved to Clearwater, Florida, where he died January 1, 1972. Survivors are his wife, two daughters, one son, 14 grandchildren, three sisters. By his request, his body was given to medical science for research.
