Read More	VAUGHN STERLING DIES IN MEXICO Influenza Fatal To Well-Known Crisfield Man Remains Sent To Home For Burial Held Responsible Position With Big Mining And Smelting Firm. Formerly In U.S. Consular Service. Resided In Mexico Several Years. On Tuesday of last week, February 26, Crisfield and vicinity was saddened by news of the death of Walter Vaughn Sterling, telegraphed from Monterrey, Nueva Leon, Mexico, where this highly respected Crisfield man passed away that morning. Mr. Sterling had been ill off and on since last fall, but had apparently recovered from influenza about three weeks previous to his demise. He was taken ill on Saturday February 16th, but at first did not realize the seriousness of his condition. The following day he called his personal physician, Dr. Harmon Cole. Immediately the doctor phoned for a trained nurse, later called in a second nurse, and the assistance of Dr. Shaw of Mexico City. It was deemed advisable to remove him the following day from Mexico City to Monterrey, for which purpose a private car was secured from the railroad. He was accompanied by Dr. Cole, as well as his company's physician Dr. Gay, the latter remaining with him at Monterrey, assisted by Dr. F. Vella Gonsalez. It was hoped that the lower altitude would be beneficial on account of a heart complication. However, on Sunday, February 24th, other complications set in which lessened his chances for recovery, and at 7 A.M. on the following Tuesday, he breathed his last. Funeral services were held in his honor in Monterrey the same day and that evening his body was shipped to Crisfield, for burial, complying with his last wishes. His remains were accompanied by Mr. C. J. Hall, his friend and business associate from Monterrey, arriving at Philadelphia early Saturday morning. Here Mr. Hall was joined by two more friends and associates of the deceased, Mr. Ed. W. Thornly, of New York City, and Mr. Floyd D. Ransom of Mexico City, also William H. and George W., brothers of the deceased, arriving in Crisfield last Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted at Asbury church, the Rev. T. J. Sard speaking very feelingly of the departed. His sermon was one that will be long remembered, not only by the bereaved family, but by all who heard him. Walter Vaughn Sterling was a man who set before himself a definite goal, who spent his life in reaching for that goal, and who at the height of his career was called by Divine command to lay down life's cross for an Immortal Crown. A man of sterling character, he can well be looked upon as an example among his fellowmen. The impressions he created wherever he traveled, brought forth the desire to seek the higher, nobler things in life, no matter how hard the struggle. The richest bequest he has left to all who ever knew or met him, is that of a shining, spotless example. A character such as his, was the fruit of personal exertion, the result of his own endeavors. His life can be likened to the building of a cathedral—the foundation firm and solid, but that part which soars towards the heavens, the turrets and spires, unable to be completed, for:—"His sun setteth while yet in the morning of life." Mr. Sterling was born in Crisfield, on June 17th, 1883, the son of George B. and Nancy Sterling of Calvary. He attended the public school of Crisfield, later graduating from Goldey College at Wilmington. His first employment took him to Philadelphia, in the credit department of the H. K. Mulford Co. Upon the death of his mother, which came as such a shock while in Philadelphia, he decided to break away from home ties and seek his fortune in the great West. He accepted a position with the Miners & Smelters Supply Co., at El Paso, Texas. In 1917 he resigned this position to enter the American Consular Service, and was stationed at Chihuahua, Chi., Mexico. In this capacity of service he gained a keen insight into American interests in Mexico, and at times his position called forth his utmost diplomacy. On November 1, 1919, he relinquished this honorable position to become ore buyer for the Chihuahua plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co., which was then the largest smelting plant in the world. During the years that followed he traveled between El Paso, Monterrey, Mexico and other points in the interest of his company. In June, 1926, he was transferred to Mexico City permanently as supply agent for Mexico, which position he held at the time of his death. Fortunately in September, 1927, Mr. Sterling arrived in Crisfield, after an absence of thirteen years. He spent two very enjoyable weeks in the city of his birth, and was entertained by relatives and friends in Crisfield, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, and Kansas City. He leaves to mourn his loss, five brothers, namely: Henry C., Hance L., William H., George W., and Marvin B.
