Description	:	Walter, better know as Walt, was born in Missouri on July 6th, 1896 to Willis and Mary Elizabeth (Boots) Winn. In 1913, he came to North Dakota with his parents and sisters and brother. They resided west of Coleharbor until moving to Kansas in 1917. Walter joined the army in 1918. He was a World War I veteran having served in the Medical Corps in England and France. He was discharged July 30, 1919. His sister, Lennie, had passed away in May of that same year. Others could remember Walt carrying Lennie as she could not walk due... Read More	Walter, better know as Walt, was born in Missouri on July 6th, 1896 to Willis and Mary Elizabeth (Boots) Winn. In 1913, he came to North Dakota with his parents and sisters and brother. They resided west of Coleharbor until moving to Kansas in 1917. Walter joined the army in 1918. He was a World War I veteran having served in the Medical Corps in England and France. He was discharged July 30, 1919. His sister, Lennie, had passed away in May of that same year. Others could remember Walt carrying Lennie as she could not walk due to arthritis. After returning from the war, he and his younger brother, Ernest, returned to ND and began farming. In 1920, Walter brought his parents and younger sister, Dorothy, back to ND. After his mother passed away in 1926, Walt had his sister Dorothy and his Dad move in with him. Dorothy married Cletus Guenther, and his widowed sister, Lillie Winn Duvall, came to live with them. Walt enjoyed fishing and he also liked watching baseball on TV. Although Walt never married, family was important to him. In the summer, Walt and his sisters, brothers and their families often met at the lake for picnics and fishing. Tarps were put up with tables underneath for the food. When it was raining, sometimes all of the relatives would meet at Walt's house. In 1958, Walt's Dad, Willis, passed away at the age of 96. Lillie continued to live with Walt until 1975. During his lifetime, Walt acquired eight and a half quarters of land. Walt was a large wheat farmer in McLean County. He retired from farming in 1969. Walt will be remembered for enjoying to fish. On 6/2/1963, Walt caught the state record for northern pike. It weighed 32 lbs 2oz., and was 51 inches. He also liked to hunt. Walt was always on hand when there was sickness in the family. He passed away on July 5, 1976, just short of his 80th birthday.
