He passed away on January 1, 2017. Wayne attended several one-room school houses but didn't finish high school. He worked in the coal mines, sheered sheep, and then joined the Navy in 1941 for World War II. While on leave, he met the love of his life, Marie Maxine Messinger, and they were married on January 12, 1946, less than one month after his discharge. To this union were born two daughters, Patricia and Pamela. After the Navy, he farmed near Guthrie Center and then drove a truck hauling gravel; before joining his brothers at K.H. Buttler Construction where he worked as a mechanic until he retired. While his brother "Butch" managed the business, Wayne kept the trucks going and operated the gravel plants. Wayne fell 40 feet at a gravel plant in 1948 and broke his left leg, which left his leg shorter and caused him pain for the rest of his life. Despite this, he always worked hard and had a knack for fixing almost anything. He built a cabin west of town for the family and renovated the inside of a van to be a camper so he and Marie could travel to every continental state. He was a devoted husband and father. Family always came first. He was a member of the American Legion and the First United Methodist Church. He and Marie enjoyed playing cards with a group of 10 couples for decades. Wayne lived in Guthrie Center his entire life because "who would want to live anywhere else?" Wayne is survived by his daughters Patricia and Pamela, grandson Michael (Claudia) Merritt who gave him two great-grandchildren James and Julissa; grandson Matthew (Sara) Merritt and as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his parents and two brothers. . .
