Wayne Marvin Harold Schultz was born in Otter Creek Township on August 31, 1935, the son of Fred and Gertrude Schultz. He passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the age of seventy-six. He was baptized in Christ at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on September 15, 1935, and later confirmed there on July 1, 1951. He received his education in the Otter Creek #5 & #6 country schools and graduated from Schleswig High School with the class of 1953. Wayne worked on the family farm in Hanover Township for two years after graduation. He joined the Army National Guard in 1953, Battery C 554th Field Artillery Battalion 34th Division. He also attended Iowa Military Academy and graduated in July 1958 as a Second Lieutenant and was promoted to First Lieutenant in July 1961. He received his honorable discharge from the Army on October 31, 1964. Wayne was married to Arliss Bielenberg on September 11, 1955, and to this union was born four children: Melanie, Alanna, Natalie, and Jeff. Wayne married Betty McKee on November 14, 1972, and gained three sons - Mike, Steve, and Dave McKee. He began a construction business with John Schultz as a partnership in 1958. From 1961-67 Wayne partnered with Paul Roger Baer until continuing on his own as Wayne Schultz Construction. As Wayne Schultz Construction, he built around 200 homes and businesses. Mike and Dave took over the business in 2002 and it is now known as McKee Construction and Overhead Door. Wayne continued to work part-time for them and also do small jobs on his own, finishing his last house in the summer of 2011. In addition to the construction business, Wayne and Betty also operated the JoMart Restaurant for two years. Wayne was a member of Denison Kiwanis Club and was always among the top salesmen of Kiwanis calendars which raise funds for Kiwanis projects. He loved to watch football, especially the Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed westerns on television and country western music. Teasing the grandchildren was one of Wayne's biggest joys creating the infamous "snicklefritz" nickname. Another favorite pastime Wayne enjoyed was vegetable gardening and helping with canning the produce. Wayne enjoyed traveling, including fishing trips to Canada with the Boy Scouts, vacations to the Lake of the Ozarks, and the seven vacation cruises. His favorite cruise was to Panama. He and Betty traveled to most of the southern states in their motor home, spending the winters in Texas. They also enjoyed camping and dancing. Wayne and Betty would host a fish fry for church and also began the annual fish fry at Yellowsmoke for local "Winter Texans". This grew to a group of 80+ friends attending from many states, some traveling from as far as 700 miles. Wayne was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. Later he became a member of the Grace Evangelical Free Church in Denison. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Dennis Lee; two sisters, Judy and Ima Jean and her husband, LeRoy. Survivors include his wife, Betty; three daughters: Melanie and her husband, Bob; Alanna and her husband, Jim; and Natalie and her husband, Gordon; four sons: Jeff and his wife, Kris; Michael and his wife, Marla; Steve and his wife, Karen; and Dave and his wife, Pamela; eighteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Verdeen and Georgia; Sally and Bob; Ralph and Mary; Rodney and Ruth; Mary and Tom; Nancy and Steve; Judy; nephews, nieces; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held 10:00 A.M., Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Brian Rihner officiated the service and graveside rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. The Grace Evangelical Praise Team performed musical selections "Rock of Ages," "Abide With Me," "Nearer My God To Thee," "Finally Home," and "Your Grace Is Enough." Serving as pallbearers were Brandon Steinkuehler, Connor Schultz, Trevor Koenck, Tanner Thelen, Dakota Brede, and Dallas Brede. Following the service the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and lunch served by the Grace Women.
