Hospital PASSED AWAY AFTER PROLONGED ILLNESS—BODY TAKEN TO CARROLL Funeral services ware held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M. E. church for W. W. Hanby, well known resident, who passed to the Great Beyond Tuesday morning, May 10. The Rev. T. B. Collins officiated. The body was then taken to Carroll, where services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M. E. church. Rev. Collins officiated, assisted by the pastor there. Burial was made in the Carroll cemetery. Mr. Hanby had been in poor health for the last four years. He was cared for the last two months at the Spirit Lake hospital but he rather grew worse. Wellington W. Hanby, the son of David and Addie Hanby, was born in Franklin county, Ohio, on February 18, 1867. He completed the race of life, and passed to his reward at Spirit Lake, Iowa, on May 10, 1938. He was at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 22 days. At the age of two years he came with his parents to Poweshiek county, Iowa. Five or six years later they came further west, locating in Carroll county. Here he attended the public schools and grew, to manhood. Here also he came to profess religion and was united with the Beulah Church near Carroll. In this locality also the early friendships of his life were formed, among them was the friendship which was destined to become a life long companionship in the person of Miss Anna Rogers. They were married in Carroll on February 28, 1889. Thus established, their home became a permanent institution for almost 50 years. Mr. and Mrs. Hanby came to Dickinson county in the year of 1919, in the spring of the year. They located a few miles east of Spirit Lake, where they have since resided. Mr. Hanby has been in poor health for the last four years. The passing of the months did not witness any improvement, but he rather grew worse. The last two months were spent with hospital treatment. The realization that he was losing ground and was drawing hear to the end of life's race became apparent. So after many weary days and nights patiently spent, early Tuesday morning as the newly risen sun was spilling his splendor over the earth, he quietly entered into rest. It was a new day for us all, but a marvelously new day for him. One in which all handicaps and hardships, all sorrow and suffering are forever done away. He was for many years a member of the Methodist church. He also held membership in Odd Fellows Lodge and in the Rebekahs. Three children were born to the Hanby home. One having died in infancy, two are left to survive and mourn the passing ot their father. They are Mrs. Carline [Caroline] Callaway of California and Howard Hanby of Spirit Lake, Iowa. There are three grandchildren, Dorothy Whitney of Wisconsin, Wilbur Callaway of California, and Henry Hanby of Spirit Lake, also five great grandchildren. Besides his faithful companion of the years, and these children, he leaves a brother, Elmer Hanby of Carroll, Iowa. W. W. Hanby was a fair, square citizen. To have dealings with him was to respect him as a man. He had a vein of humor in his makeup, and loved a joke whether it was on himself or someone else. His habits were above reproach in the eyes of all who knew him. The testimony of those who cared for him in the last illness is to the effect that he was an unusually patient sufferer, and appreciative of every thing done in his behalf. Having lived well, he died in peace with God himself and all the world. Many friends will hold him long in kindly and grateful remembrances. His life illustrated the teaching of Friendship, Loyalty and Truth. He has followed the stat of hope over the hill tops, beyond our vision into the Valley of Peace. The pallbearers, all members of the local I. O..O. F. lodge, Ernest Sharp, Leon Sharp, Bert Waugh, Bert Ash, Don Gray and Jake Frick, accompanied the remains to Carroll,as did Burl Ellis and Charles Ayres who put on the work. Others going to Carroll for the last rites were Welly Osborne and Gerald, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Lochner, and Mrs. Robert Odendahl of Terril, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hanby and Henry, Mrs. Anna Hanby, Mr and Mrs. J. E. Osborne and the Misses Fern and Edith Stonebrook.
